TIL that the Jellybean "What's that Song" widget works with audio from Apps. Working great with TuneIn. Here's a track I grabbed off of Couleur3 Fun.
In my day MTV actually had music and we liked it!
Originally shared by The Current
Jake Rudh posted his pick for Video of the Day and it's ALL MTV idents. Seriously, just one after another for six minutes. He explains,
"Leading up to the MTV event at First Avenue this coming Friday night, Transmission simulates an hour of watching classic MTV from (1981 - 1992) this Thursday at 10pm."
Take a break and revisit the astronauts, the cows, and the animation that looks even stranger now.
Has anyone else reripped their entire music collection lately?
Last time was in 2003 so I had bitrates as low as 96k. Everything is now 320k mp3 and I'm ready to re-import into Google Music. Some interesting observations:
- CD ripping must contribute to global warming.
- CDs are heavy ~40 lbs of CDs fitting in .1 m³ (about 3.5 ft³)
- Gracenote/CDDB has declined in quality (album art especially)
- Price stickers bring back memories. Tower records, FNAC and 32 CHF albums, oh my.
Nice thing is I can better judge the provenance of my collection and correct it. Just received 3 custom CDs from Twin/Tone including two albums from the late-80s Minneapolis band The Wallets.
Have you noticed that there are lots more Sub Pop Records albums in Google Play? Lots of grunge era stuff and more...
The best Electro-Rock band of the moment that's currently helping me burn the candle at both ends. Think Daft Punk crossed with Rage Against the Machine, with a dash of Introduce Yourself era Faith No More.
Their top-10 single is below, but you'll find the rest of their repertoire rocks much harder. Check out Palabra mi Amor for a taste:
SHAKA PONK - Palabra Mi Amor (feat. Bertrand Cantat) [OFFICIAL VIDEO]
Or this set from the Paleo Music Festival:
Shaka Ponk - Live Paléo Festival Nyon 2011 [Pro-Shot]
[reposting this again for #musicmonday and because I deleted my original post..]
Remember folks you get a free play if you use Google Play and are in the USA. If that describes you and I'm not already following you let me know in the comments or DM me via my profile and I'll add you to my Google Players circle.
Oh and here's 17 tracks of awesome.
Nice to see Ultra Records titles popping up in Google Play including this one from France.
I'd recommend starting wtih the electronic-surf themed Tchiki Tchiki Tchiki.
From Denmark - Burning down the wheels tonight'
The laser beams on the right sure resemble the Google Play logo..
The Current described this well:
“All My Life” is futuristic gold that I only wish could loop on for another 10 minutes. Twin Cities vocal talent Jana Nyberg lends her chords to the first two tracks of this EP and it’s safe to say that without her this song would not be as complete. You can feel her body pulsating to the beat just as easily as yours probably will, and in an instant we’re transported back to the height of Studio 54. The All My Life EP is out now on Kitsuné.

Getting ready to watch The Shins livestreaming on Google TV at the Bonnaroo music festival. Gotta say the picture quality is top-notch.
Here's a pop song from Switzerland to get your morning moving.
Thought I'd add some variety to my commute so I'm listening to Couleur3 again on TuneIn. Sort of like the Suisse version of KEXP or The Current they're publicly funded and play an interesting mix of music.
I was pondering about how pop music is tuned for mp3 dynamic range this morning and came up with an idea:
Google Play Musicgram
Just imagine:
- AM Radio effect for all your Sinatra songs.
- See what Elvis would sound like autotuned.
- "Chipmunk" Barry White. (or chipmunk Cyndy Lauper and see if your dog can hear it..)
- RPM 33,45,78 (for those that remember such things.)
- Def setting (adds random DJ scratching)
Or we standardize something like this as "html5 audio transforms".

Nice to see that Anil uploaded this to Soundcloud. This hold music is permanently seared into my brain after many years of using freeconferencecall.com..

A great deal @$3.99 for people in the US. Although I must say I like the original Hanging on the Telephone by The Nerves just as much:
The Nerves - Hanging On The Telephone, Original version 45, Blondie. 1976.
Minnesota Public Radio is doing some inventive stuff. They have a great alternative music station in The Current and they're running this great Music/Comedy series called Wits. Check out the segment below for a taste.
One of the best things about aging another year is receiving interesting new midwestern music birthday presents. This includes a CD from Red Pens out of Minneapolis.
Also gotta love the 8-bit flair on the Grain Belt Records site!
Some more La Roux to start out your Wednesday. I didn't think the Kanye remix added much, but the rest are deserving of the word Gold.
Music and comedy-- streaming now. Highly recommended.
If you liked the video you'll like the album even more. At the very least give In for the Kill a listen.
And I see that La Roux has a page here but they haven't done much with it. Consider circling and they might start posting here in addition to twitter/facebook.
[And if you're a musician or rep one I'd be interested in knowing what G+ can do better for you!]
It seems like I missed a whole trend of 80s revival music back in 2009.
[I can't wait until I discover dubstep in 2014!]
Closing the viral loop: we're slowly getting there. Here's a personal anecdote.
- heard a neat song on the radio
- used Ears to figure out what it was.
- watched the youtube video via Ears link. Liked the 80s-TRONish vibe enough to +1 it.
- Searched for La Roux on the browser, found friends recommending specific tracks.
- back to Ears, go to Play Music.
- Bought the album after listening to recommended tracks.
- Sharing this here (and will on public G+ in a few) so others can discover.
Loops like this are what power your social network. We can still do a better job, but I'm quite happy with my experience here and I hope others will slowly get there too.
discover, consume, share, repeat FTW

Please welcome Baron von Luxxury to Google+! Add him to your music or DJ circles today and check out his new album which you can snag for free for one week only. (though it's definitely worth paying for..)
Dubbed the "Post-Post-Synthpop King" by the LA Weekly, Baron Von Luxxury seeks to erase the lines between high and low art by merging elements of innovative dance music with the idiot immediacy of classic pop.
I had the good fortune to work with him at Red Hat before he became famous. Some day I'll tell some stories about hairnet banner ads and psychic web-sites trying to go legit by offering linux phone support. (yes! really!)

It's #musicmonday and #mashupmonday
This just passed by my #mashup live stream. You get a years worth of pop music in six minutes. solid.
I just realized how much working on Google+ has exposed me to popular culture. Youtube integration exposed me to todays pop music. Celebrity endorsements exposed me to the whole Kardashian thing (which I was blissfully unaware of!).
And now I get to understand how they do things in Japan.

Here's the big news... We're delighted to welcome the entirety of AKB48 onto Google+...
If you don't know AKB48, you don't live in Japan (or in fact, many other parts of Asia.) They are phenomenon that might be equivalent to the Beatles + American Idol + the Spice Girls + Justin Timberlake... They are a roster of more than 200 hand-selected performers who are the subject of huge media attention, and support from millions of devoted fans.
One of the philosophies around their stardom was to preserve meaningful interaction with, and access to their fans. They used to do "handshake events." As their stardom grew, this method of interaction wasn't scalable... Google+ is going to allow them to reconnect to their fans in an intimate, authentic way.
They'll be using Hangouts on Air to broadcast their concerts... they'll be regularly scheduling Hangouts to interact with their fans. Each of the stars will have their own profile, and AKB48 themselves will have a +Page...
I actually haven't yet heard them, and I'm apparently the only one presently in Japan now who hasn't. I can't yet say if AKB48 is personally for me... But I am thrilled at their adoption of our service, and they're committed to pushing the envelope of what is possible in terms of artist-fan relationship. And that's a plus.
Curious if anyone else was invited to this? Anyone interested in going with me?

Unofficial Google phone support today:
* GTV Music app (won't play an album, only plays first song.)
* Picasa Multiple account + dasher fun (uploads going to wrong account, looks broken because both accounts have same name/profile photo) Figured it out by comparing obfuscated gaia IDs..
Lots of "Open Link in Incognito Window" required, sadly :(

Want to find some great new music? Load up this URL:
https://
Then click "Most Recent".
You'll find all sorts of interesting remixes scrolling by. There's enough content that you can't even listen to it all, so you can pick out the most interesting stuff.
(And feel free to substitute some suitable generic term if you're not really into DJs and electronic/pop music.)
Just realized that I have 8 invites left for Google Music beta.. You might want to try it out just to get your hands on a few hundred free songs. (Admit it, you really do like the Bay City Rollers Saturday Night!)
First 8 emails posted below get an invite.
Testing out latest finsky, looks like there's more music there now...

The antidote to too much Phil Collins in my stream..
Side note: The Current is a public radio station in Minneapolis that only plays alternative music ala KEXP. Definitely worth a listen.
search quality peeps:
Can you autocomplete proper names that have stop-characters in them? Maybe pull them from freebase or something? #justsaying
cla4514war -- a book
ke -- a musical artist
3oh!3 -- another musical artist
Even odder is the prompt 'Search instead for cla4514war'
Note that that Youtube executes these searches properly. And an unreleased music product fails badly here (which was how I found this issue in the first place.)

Unun stuff is pretty rare to this day. I couldn't find anything from this era on youtube, but you can try out these track samples. Kung Fu Blue is quite fun, right Garth Webb?
Did someone say music mondays? Here's some of the best music to come out of minnesota since tapes n' tapes...
The language, the food, Paris during christmas time, the Tour de France, snowboarding at Mont Blanc, summer music festivals and the TGV all spring to mind. Living in Geneva for a few years was an amazing experience!

Happy Bastille Day! What's your favorite part of French culture?
I'd like to revive a great feature from the Vox blogging platform -- the question of the day. It was a great way to overcome writers block and meet like-minded people. And it's a lot of fun!
So feel free to reshare this post, add your thoughts, and share with the circle of your choice. If posting publicly use the #qotd hash tag.
Still stumped? Try using Sparks and search for french related things!
Cheers,
Paul
On a lark tuned in to the Duran Duran reunion concert tonight. Now I haven't been to an arena sized rock concert for years and years... Since when did it become customary to hold your cell-phone screen aloft instead of a lighter?
In any case, well worth watching, their music has held up pretty well.
Oh and if you want something made in this decade that's, well Duran Duran like, check out the Bay Area's own, The Lovemakers.
Does LiveJournal have an official band? "Best Friends Forever" has the appropriate name, lots of songs about boyfriends and they even pull off writing an ode to being Abraham Lincoln's wife:
My Head In Front Of Your Head (mp3).
So one of the last hurdles to mod_perl 2.0 development has been fixed. libapreq 2.07 has been in gestation for months and is now available. This is the first non-dev release and it opens the doors to actually using this in production.
