Manny Brum - I think the jury is still out on whether the iPhone 5 will meet expectations.
I do wonder if there are any Ping users on G+, if you could export your data what would you like to do with it? I haven't looked at ping since it was launched, so I'm not sure what's in there...
Paul Lindner Still out? Have you been reading any comparisons, news, or comments about the iPhone 5 today? All but the most in-denial fanbois are disappointed. Will it be a total failure, of course not. Enough people will buy it. It sure won't help Apple to win market share back though, and Apple is going to face a round of lawsuits now from the companies that own LTE patents. You think they would have made it worthwhile.
I try to not pay too much attention to press drama :) They're always building you up and tearing you down and trying to manufacture horse races.
The iPhone 5 was getting hype before the 4S was even launched, so I think it was guaranteed to not meet expectations.
The leaks didn't help either. Guess we'll just have to see what the 5S offers.
Paul, just wait for a new round of Android phones, pick out half of the new features, take one from 2 releases ago and bam... iPhone 5S
Using that formula, iPhone users may actually get NFC and mobile payments next time around... cross your fingers.

Anyone have opinions on this? From my vantage it appears that it's much much harder to get any traction on any standards due to flaws in the consensus reaching process.
I've also seen how the governmental/industry fora work too.They have their own set of problems, but have also been able to achieve a lot with their own processes.
Are Carbon Offsets for Open Source software doable?
Instead of planting a tree or sequestering CO2 why shouldn't we spend that money making open source software more energy efficient?

I am with you. Ruby, Python, etc programmers should be buying offsets. How many mega wats a lost to bad code.

Actually Java is not bad in terms of CPU use, it can be a memory hog, and due to trying to be OS agnostic, it is bad at using modern system APIs, but in terms of being power efficient it is not bad.
( I have actually been thinking alot about this topic over the last year. )

And JVMs are not soooo bad. Jonathan's correct that the memory overhead is a bit ugly (48+ bytes overhead for a String in openjdk comes to mind).
And if you want energy efficiency Dalvik does okay.
Me? I'd just like to find more ways of funding grungy optimization work on the open stack that powers most of the computing grid...
Paul Lindner I wonder how hard it would be to find funders for some proposed Apache/python/php/ect improvement if you could could show a watt per mega request gain or something?
I know it is not the short term answer but I really think we need new language that has high-level primitives but lets you get down to the OS/bare metal and control memory layout of your data. Rust seems like a possible candidate but it is hard to tell at this stage how it will play out.
Rust looks interesting, and Go is also a contender here. Will have to see if I can get someone interested in megawatts/changelist...
I suppose one could use Alexa or what ever to figure out how much power could be saved across the net for some change.

In fact someone should build a business making open source software more energy efficient and take on Carbon Offset 4514$. I can see it now:

I'm still always surprised that java doesn't have a native string type and instead uses a char[]/offset/size data structure.

multiply.com is shutting down their social network. Anyone want to look into ways of bulk importing these folks?
According to igraph we track around 150k multiply.com profiles, so it may not be a big needle mover. However it might be worth it for a PR win. (Or not... if the lede is that Google+ is killing smaller social networks..)

This is pretty cool, I have great memories of the old Loring in Minneapolis. It closed then moved and reopened after Paul and I left Minnesota so I've never tried the current incarnation.
I think my positive memories revolve more around the amazing, funky space than the food or drinks but I'll certainly give the Oakland outpost a try once it opens.
Wow. Definitely worth checking out when it opens. Had many memories at the one in Minneapolis.

Google is a tourist destination -- at least for my in-laws. They all want to go -- two retirees and a middle age school teacher/poet. I guess I forget that people have this fascination with what we do.
Anyone considered opening _Googleworld_ or _Googleland_?
Figure I'll give them the drive around followed by a walk through 43 and lunch. Any other suggestions?
