Neotropolis 2023

Neotropolis 2023

Cyberpunk Neotropolis 2023, with Google Glass and my fiancé J9 was fantastic.  Used my non-implant Google Glass to capture many visual bits!

Traveled to the dystopia cyberpunk future where I jacked in my Google Glass and was able to stay in the moment and in character. So many magical moments.

May I collect your Visual Bits?

I dusted off my Google Glass for Neotropolis. It was magical. But this was an environment where photo consent is the norm, and being augmented is, well, expected.

I'm yearning for an updated Glass with a Pixel camera sensor and portrait photo/video. But even without that I was able to stay in the moment and get some shots I would not have at all.

Looking for a convenient place to repair my pixel 2 XL screen in SF/East Bay.

Looks like all the ubreakifix outlets are south of here (Fremont, Santa Clara..)

Screen is starting to shed glass shards so it's probably time...

Festive 50

Instead of reflecting on the past year think about what's happened for the last 50 years. I finally got around to listening to a 4 part series about computing in 1968. Highly recommended, very very well done and will blow your mind.

Makes you realize that most of what we've been doing has been riffing on groundbreaking things from that era.

Art? Computer Animation? It all started then with some .. (Ep 1)

Google Glass? Augmented Reality? Ivan Sutherland's "Ultimate Display" conceived of it. (Ep 2)

https://nextbillionseconds.com/2018/11/30/1968-when-the-world-began-part-two-sword-of-damocles/

Hangouts? Shared Docs? Remote Collaboration? Doug Engelbert's The Mother of all Demos was already there. (Ep 3)

And the impact felt, with +110664632946820915121 and others:

Sadly I missed out on the retrospective at the Computer History Museum (was fighting urgent legal/policy fires then)

We stand on the shoulders of giants.

*Wildfire* was quite the system back in the 90s, seems like the Android Dialer or Google Voice could easily implement the best features today.

Some tidbits:
- When summoned Wildfire says "I'm here"
- Whispering in your ear could be done on phone, but also in real life if you had, say Google Glass.

More details from an old Fortune article:

http://archive.fortune.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/1996/07/08/214362/index.htm

_For now, Wildfire is only for those willing to shell out big bucks. A business with a dedicated server pays an average of ,400 per user to get set up. Independent subscribers who buy the service from authorized service providers generally pay monthly charges of between 50 and 00. Lowering prices is the company's top priority. Competition is looming, but to date no one else has as sophisticated a product on the market._

You owe it to yourself to read _"Through A Glass, Darkly: Technical, Policy, and Financial Actions to Avert the Coming Digital Dark Ages"_ by +100430532548191465832. Saving the bits isn't enough.

Dealing with the _"Help me with my website"_ question...

When people find out you're a Googler they often ask _"can you help me with my site"_?  I mostly give some simple advice and leave it at that.  This time is different.

But first..  a story.

My wife, Julie, fears dentists due to unfortunate childhood events.  While on vacation she had some gum bleeding.  Using Google Search I found Maisy, an oral surgeon, and her husband, Amir, an anesthesiologist.  Together they did the impossible and got Julie the dental care she needed.  She went above and beyond in so many ways.

Alas, there were complications on discharge.  Despite a blood test only 10 days earlier her levels had dropped really low.  Maisy and I talked a lot while we waited for the transfusion to complete in the ER.  We spoke about how she and her husband started their practice and how they wanted to grow it.  Many questions about online marketing came up.  I said I would see what I could do.  After everything I'd walk over glass for Maisy.

So....

*What's the best way to help?*  I'm no expert, but I am acquainted with some non-google consultants I could engage.  Looking for any advice or referrals, especially for people that deal with local.

Oh and if you need a dentist, it's well worth the trip.  Great people, dog friendly, pleasant surroundings, and the most advanced dental technology.

Graffiti partially removed/obscured and one bag of trash dealt with this morning.

I have a bag with solvent, gloves, rags, trash bags and a scrub brush.  If other people are keen on helping I can leave it out.  I also brought my portable leaf blower -- I can get some of that broken glass taken care of.

Also reported illegal dumping using SeeClickFix on 7th & Linden  (Download the App, it actually gets stuff done).  Also can someone get Caltrans to pick up the sofa and other junk that was dumped in the lot?

I have one invite left for purchasing Google Glass for the first person that wants it.

I have one invite left for purchasing Google Glass for the first person that wants it.  Remember the requirements are:

- be a US resident

- be 18 years or older

- purchase Glass

- provide a U.S. based shipping address OR pick up the device in New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles

Wow, lots of questions! We'd rather "show" than "tell" so here you go: the mono earbud, and the Glass that Explorers will be getting when they swap later this year.

Edit: More questions! The earbud plugs into Glass, so you can choose whether to use it.

Was asked if there will be a version of Gopher for Glass :)

Early Sunday, before it got too hot, Julie Lindner  and I took our dog Tommy for a walk in the Oakland Hills.  With some care (and a bit of luck!) you can get some nice shots with the Glass camera.

I missed this part!  Timothy and I worked together on +1

This demo of Glass is insane.  I'd really like to get the opportunity to jump out of the zepplin over SF.

This is just so amazing.

We think technology should work for you—to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don’t.

A group of us from Google[x] started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment. We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input. So we took a few design photos to show what this technology could look like and created a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do.

Please follow along as we share some of our ideas and stories. We’d love to hear yours, too. What would you like to see from Project Glass?

After almost a month our Flume MR is finally running again. The mystery of the broken shard has been finally solved!

*shard (n.)*
a piece of broken ceramic, metal, glass or rock typically having sharp edges.

*sharding (v.)*
dunno… but you will likely wound yourself and you get to keep all the pieces.
