In my server room we've always selected Greek and Roman Gods or Heros as names for the machines. Romulus and Remus are our 2 DNS servers, Athens is the name of our LAN/Workgroup, River Styx is the name of our firewall. Mercury is our email server. Each server name is chosen to correlate the God attributes to the purpose of the machine. The Romulus/Remus/Mercury servers have gone through a few replacements, but otherwise in 14 years we've managed to prevent reusing server names even after the machines are retired.
The inspiration for this came from working with my first ISP back in 1994. Their server room was called "Forest" and every server was named after a different tree.
