I used to use some free/donation-based secondary DNS service (I even donated) -- I forget what it was called, but it went away. So at that point I decided it was worth paying for a commercial service in order to have a possibly better chance of not having to repeat the hassle that came with moving all my domains to something else. Since then I've been pretty satisfied with http://www.dnsmadeeasy.com/ -- worth noting though that I'm using it with ~25 domains; may not be cost-effective for fewer.
