This article also showcases how sometimes you have to throw away the first few concepts before you get it right. Happy that I had a small part at the beginning of the project and props to the many folks that invested time and effort to get this out the door.
Very interesting - the article describes a design process that's almost the opposite of how I had imagined this came around!
There's a whole load of CV research based on story-telling from photos / video - somehow the idea of G+ stories developing from an observed user need rather than pure academia (as I'd imagined) really wraps this up nicely :-)
Yeah the core stories team had no background in CV, tho we later found some internal google GV tools we could use for scoring photos, recognizing landmarks etc
There is significant existing academic work on generating a "story" from those elements as well using various approaches - e.g. the papers from a search for [Computer Vision video summarization].
Really nice product release btw :-)

- Install network monitoring on the router. Use sflow or something like http://www.pmacct.net/ Also gather interface stats (up/down/max bw, etc)
- display results for everyone to see
- use built-in TV/video out (if available)
- or use an led sign like the one below..

I just grabbed a pallet from a gardening store the other day for use in a project. They just let me take it home for free. If only I knew I could have gotten $5 after repairing it...
I found the rent vs own part particularly relevant to our own industry. Most digital software, services and content are very much blue-pallets these days.

A Windows 7 deployment image was accidentaly sent to all Windows machines, including laptops, desktops, and even servers. This image started with a repartition / reformat set of tasks.
As soon as the accident was discovered, the SCCM server was powered off – however, by that time, the SCCM server itself had been repartitioned and reformatted.
So I was trying to buy a copy of The Decline of Western Civilization this weekend.

Has anyone looked into mechanisms for loading busses more quickly? A couple of thoughts:
- Add a card scanner on the 2nd door, deputize a Googler to check entrants.
- On campus make a pickup stop in a secured area. Then people don't have to badge as they board.
- Install two badge readers on double-deckers, one on the stairs, one by the driver.
- Do not wait for tardy passengers if the bus is running late, there's probably another one right behind.
I wrote most of this post while the Van Ness bus boarded passengers @Sacramento which was blocking an entire lane of traffic.

Next time you're on the west side of 1201 Charleston look up to the trees and you'll notice a dozen -Snowy- Great Egret nests. Maybe you'll even catch them flying from tree-to-tree carrying newly found twigs. They really get going on the weekends when they have the campus to themselves.

There's probably a better way to do this, but..... I created a Mock inside a GuiceBerry module, then injected it into the test class.
There were two tests that mocked the same method, the second test would blow up because it saw the previous stub, and returned null for the second invocation instead of re-stubbing.
Adding a Mockito.reset(...) on the injected value fixes that.
Thanks to verbose logging I was able to figure that out.
Phew, time for bed.

The issue described by Eric Raymond below is much more mundane. It's actually a problem in the way Google+ previews web snippets.
A couple of weeks ago we introduced the new Article embed type. You'll notice these posts by their distinctive large-photos with a ragged-edge. This new code caused the problem.
The markup on theblaze.com uses the markup. That, combined with some other factors causes the preview processing to fail. This issue was reported to us on April 1st and a fix will be released to production early next week.
I opened an issue on our developer site to track this issue since it does affect a handful of other sites that use the NewsArticle markup. Feel free to Star it to receive updates:

I hate to keep complaining, but sharing from The Blaze is still impossible, you're the only one I've seen acknowledging it, is it something that the folks at the Blaze can fix? Is anyone working with them to your knowledge? Has the fix you mentioned on the 8th simply not rolled out yet?

The workaround is to do a screencap, add that to the post, then put the link in the body of the post. (Which is something I do anyway on sites with no, or bad pictures.)
(And that's despite getting a great preview image/text from the link - it failed on hitting the Post button.)
